Fans of gritty Scottish crime dramas have reason to celebrate — the BBC has officially recommissioned Rebus for a second series, following the huge success of its first season.

Based on the best-selling novels by Ian Rankin, the modern adaptation stars Richard Rankin as the brooding detective DS John Rebus. Series one ended on a tense cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager for more. Now, it’s confirmed that Rebus will return, with production on season two set to begin later this year ahead of its 2026 premiere on BBC One and iPlayer.

The new season promises to dive deeper into Edinburgh’s criminal underworld, exploring the dark connections between the city’s drug trade and the elite world of law and finance.

Ian Rankin, who also serves as executive producer, teased fans: “Season one of Rebus ended on a cliffhanger. Only screenwriter Gregory Burke knows what happens next. So I’m hugely excited that season two will soon be with us. Rebus is back – mean, moody and as magnificent as ever.”

Gregory Burke, who crafted the gritty scripts, shared his enthusiasm about continuing the story: “Ian Rankin’s character and body of work are the perfect materials with which to explore contemporary Scottish society and the turbulent world that surrounds it.”

BBC Scotland’s Head of Commissioning, Louise Thornton, called the show’s return a top priority, saying: “We were blown away with the audience response to the new-look Rebus the first time round. The combination of brilliant storytelling, powerful performances and top-class production values will make this new series must-see television.”

Star Richard Rankin, who is no relation to Ian, has praised the writing behind the series. “The source material is so wonderfully written by Ian Rankin, and Greg Burke’s scripts bring such honesty and depth. He understands this world, and that richness comes through in every scene,” the actor said.

With its intense drama, layered characters, and sharp social commentary, Rebus has quickly become one of the BBC’s standout crime offerings. And with a second series on the way, the mystery is only getting deeper.
