Nigerian music star Ayra Starr has carved her name into history books, becoming the first African artist to receive the Latin Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) — a feat that places her at the forefront of African global music excellence.
The milestone recognition was awarded following the massive international success of her hit single “Santa”, a sizzling collaboration with Jamaican super-producer Rvssian and Puerto Rican music icon Rauw Alejandro. The genre-fusing track, which blends Afrobeats and Reggaeton, has sold over 10 million units in the U.S. Latino market — meeting the stringent requirement for Latin Diamond status.
“Santa” is a cultural bridge and a sonic explosion. This moment is for Nigeria, for Africa, and for every young girl with a dream,” Ayra shared on social media after the announcement.
A Rare Global Feat
The RIAA Latin Diamond certification is one of the most coveted honours in the Latin music world — and rarely achieved by non-American or non-Latin artists. To qualify, a song must reach Diamond-level sales and be performed in Spanish or a mix of Spanish and English. Ayra Starr’s “Santa” checks both boxes, with its Spanglish lyrics and infectious global rhythm.
Since its release, “Santa” has become a continental crossover hit, racking up:
• Multiple Platinum certifications in Spain and Mexico
• No. 1 on the Spanish music chart
• Top 2 positions in Colombia, Ecuador, and much of Central America
• Viral traction across TikTok and YouTube Latin America
Ayra Joins Rema in RIAA Latin Ranks
With this achievement, Ayra Starr joins fellow Nigerian star Rema, who earned RIAA Latin Platinumfor his collaboration “Bubalu”. However, Ayra’s Diamond status takes it a step higher — making her the first to reach that level.
This is yet another barrier-breaking milestone in the singer’s young but powerful career. Known for hits like Rush, Bloody Samaritan, and Sability, Ayra Starr has proven herself as not just a national treasure but a genre-bending global phenomenon.
Elevating African Music
Ayra’s latest win reflects a larger trend: Afrobeats and African artists are not just exporting music—they’re reshaping the global soundscape. With bold collaborations, multilingual versatility, and international charisma, artists like Ayra are redefining what African success looks like on the world stage.
“This is more than a plaque. It’s a message to the world that African music has no limits. We’re not just participating—we’re leading,” said a Mavin Records rep.
As the accolades pile up and Ayra Starr continues to innovate, one thing is clear: She’s not just a star — she’s a trailblazer.
