Hip-hop star Rakim Athelaston Mayers, better known as ASAP Rocky, is facing serious legal trouble as his trial begins in Los Angeles. The rapper, actor, and fashion icon is accused of firing a gun at his former friend and fellow member of the ASAP collective, Terell Ephron (aka Relli).

Charges and Courtroom Drama

Rocky is charged with two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm stemming from a November 2021 incident. If convicted, he could face up to 24 years in prison. Despite being offered a plea deal involving just six months in jail, Rocky opted to go to trial, a decision that puts his future in jeopardy.

In court, Rocky appeared composed, wearing a gray suit and dark glasses, which he removed when proceedings began. His family, including his mother and sister, were present, but his partner Rihanna, with whom he shares two sons, did not attend and is not expected to appear during the trial.

The trial began amidst a heated exchange between the prosecution and defense over a last-minute ballistics report. Rocky’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, argued for a delay, but the judge denied the request, allowing the trial to move forward.

The Prosecution’s Case

Prosecutors are heavily relying on Ephron’s testimony and surveillance footage of the alleged shooting near Hollywood and Vine. Ephron claims that Rocky fired a gun at him, grazing his knuckles, following a heated argument.

However, key details of the case have raised questions. The police did not recover a firearm or shell casings at the scene. Ephron later provided 9mm shell casings to investigators, which the defense plans to scrutinize, noting that no fingerprints were recovered from them.

Prosecutors presented still images from surveillance footage showing a man, allegedly Rocky, holding what appears to be a gun. However, the defense contests these claims, stating the firearm in question was a starter pistol used as a prop.

The Defense’s Strategy

Rocky’s legal team plans to challenge Ephron’s credibility, describing him as a “hater” motivated by jealousy and financial gain. Ephron has also filed a civil lawsuit against Rocky, seeking damages for the incident, which the defense argues demonstrates ulterior motives.

The defense will argue that no credible evidence links Rocky to the alleged shooting, emphasizing the lack of shell casings at the scene and the absence of a firearm. They also plan to call witnesses to testify about the starter pistol seen in the surveillance footage.

Rocky’s team has not decided whether he will testify in his own defense, though his lawyer has indicated he is willing to take the stand if necessary.

A High-Stakes Gamble

The stakes for Rocky couldn’t be higher. Beyond the potential prison sentence, a conviction could derail his flourishing career. With a starring role in a Spike Lee film alongside Denzel Washington and his involvement as a co-chair for the upcoming Met Gala, Rocky’s future hangs in the balance.

While the trial unfolds, fans and observers await the verdict in a case that could mark a turning point in the rapper’s life and career.
