Ariel Winter has spoken candidly about her harrowing experiences growing up in Hollywood, revealing that she received “inappropriate messages from older men” while still a child star.
Now 27, the Modern Family actress reflected on her early rise to fame and the disturbing attention she received from so-called “male predators” in the industry. In an emotional interview with DailyMail.com, she shared how those encounters left deep psychological scars.
“I am familiar with male predators because I worked in Hollywood at a young age. I started at age four,” Ariel explained. “By the time I was on a laptop and cell phone, I was getting inappropriate messages from older men, and it caused trauma.”
She went on to reveal that the disturbing interactions—both online and in person—pushed her into therapy. “The experiences I had in person and online as a child have affected me so deeply that I’ve had to go to therapy for it. The movie and TV industry is a dark place,” she said.
Ariel, who played Alex Dunphy on the beloved sitcom Modern Family, appeared on the show for its entire 11-season run. Although she described the ending of the series in 2020 as “hard,” she acknowledged that she was also ready to grow beyond her child star image.
“We were like a real family,” she said. “It was weird knowing it would just be over… but at the same time, I was ready to start something new as an adult.”
She also recalled being just 11 when the show began, never anticipating the massive success it would achieve. “I was just like, ‘Oh awesome, I got a job.’ What I was so excited for was to get the chance to work with Al Bundy,” she said, referring to Ed O’Neill, who played her on-screen grandfather. “Once the show started, it was an immediate hit. And being on the same show for so long? That doesn’t really happen anymore.”
Ariel’s brave revelations add to the growing conversation around child stars and the unseen pressures and dangers they often face behind the scenes in the entertainment industry.
