Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has surpassed Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two at the global box office, claiming the fifth spot on 2024’s top-grossing films list. The musical fantasy, made on a reported $150 million budget, has achieved a global cume of $717 million, narrowly edging past Dune 2’s $714.64 million haul.
Dune: Part Two, featuring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Rebecca Ferguson, was an early blockbuster of 2024, grossing $282.14 million in the US and $714.64 million worldwide. However, Wicked’s international success, including $248.2 million across 80 markets and a $468.8 million domestic cume, has solidified its position as a box office heavyweight.
Despite its availability on digital platforms, Wicked continues to draw audiences, with projections indicating a potential $750 million global run. Its March release in Japan could push it even further.
This marks a significant win for Wicked, as it demonstrates the enduring appeal of musicals in a blockbuster-dominated market, and for Ariana Grande, whose performance has undoubtedly contributed to the film’s success.
Stay tuned as the global box office race heats up!
