Brazilian winger Antony has marked his loan spell at Real Betis with his first goal for the La Liga side, making an early impact after his temporary move from Manchester United.
The 24-year-old joined the Seville-based club for the rest of the season in a straight loan deal with no option to buy, with Betis covering up to 84% of his wages—a move aimed at easing United’s wage bill.
Antony’s La Liga Debut and First Goal
After making his La Liga debut in a 2-2 draw against Athletic Bilbao, Antony found the net in Betis’ recent 3-2 loss to Celta Vigo. The Brazilian opened the scoring in the 9th minute, setting the tone for what seemed like a promising outing for Betis. Diego Llorente doubled the lead before halftime, but Celta Vigo staged a stunning comeback in the second half with goals from Fran Beltran, Javi Rodriguez, and Williot Swedberg.
Despite ending up on the losing side, Antony’s goal earned praise from Spanish media. Journalist Basilio Garcia of Eldes Marque wrote:
“The Brazilian striker, in a display of quality, has scored his first goal in La Liga EA Sports, and although it is not his first match for Betis, it serves as a calling card for his immense quality with the ball at his feet.”
Antony’s Struggles at Manchester United
Antony moved to United in the summer of 2022 from Ajax for a reported £82m under Erik ten Hag, but his performances have failed to justify the hefty price tag. In 96 appearances, he has scored only 12 goals, leading to widespread criticism and labeling as one of the Premier League’s biggest transfer flops.
Could Antony Stay at Real Betis?
The winger himself has hinted at the possibility of staying at Real Betis beyond the summer, though discussions would be needed with the club’s management.
Speaking about his time in Spain, Antony said:
“I had a difficult time in England. We have to respect the process. I am grateful to Manchester. If I have to stay longer or not, I will have to speak to the president. I am enjoying being able to play everything, with goals, with assists. For me now I have to enjoy every day, help the team, the manager.”
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether Antony can rebuild his reputation in La Liga and possibly secure a long-term future away from Old Trafford.
