Anthill Studios is making a bold move to fill the huge gap in Nigerian children’s programming with its new platform, Anthill Family.
Why Children’s Content Matters
Studio founder Niyi Akinmolayan has long criticized the Nigerian film industry for neglecting movies and series tailored for kids. He argues that the lack of African representation in mainstream animated content leaves young viewers disconnected from their own heritage.
“It’s disheartening to see that Nigerian filmmakers often overlook children’s movies,” Akinmolayan stated. “But this trend must change.”
With Anthill Family, the studio plans to create engaging, culturally rich stories that teach empathy, family values, and responsibility while showcasing Africa’s history and geography.
A New Wave in Nollywood Animation
The push for children’s content in Nollywood is gaining momentum. One major upcoming project is “IYANU,” an original animated series by Roye Okupe premiering on April 5.
What to expect from IYANU:
• Inspired by Yoruba mythology
• All-African voice cast including Stella Damasus, Shaffy Bello, and Blossom Chukwujekwu
• Streaming on Showmax (Africa, June 13) and ITVX (UK/Ireland, Summer 2025)
Based on Okupe’s graphic novel “Iyanu: Child of Wonder”, the series follows a young orphan who discovers ancient powers. Fans have already compared it to “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, praising its stunning animation and storytelling.
