Andrew Lloyd Webber Reveals Secret Battle with Alcoholism

In a vulnerable and unprecedented move, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber has revealed that he is a “recovering alcoholic.” The 78-year-old composer, whose legendary works include The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, confessed in a candid interview published on April 18, 2026, that he struggled with a secret addiction for years. This revelation marks a significant moment for Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber recovery, as he shares the “ludicrous lengths” he went to while hiding his drinking from his family and the public.

Lloyd Webber admitted that his struggle intensified during the production of School of Rock on Broadway in 2015. While he publicly claimed to be sober at the time, he was actually “white-knuckling” it without professional support. Fearing that sobriety was stifling his creativity, he began drinking in secret. He described a downward spiral where he eventually turned to vodka to mask the scent of alcohol, desperately trying to maintain an image of sobriety while his personal life reached a breaking point.

The turning point came approximately 16 months ago when his family reached a state of desperation. The composer noted that while he believed his drinking was a well-kept secret, those closest to him were acutely aware of the problem. His wife, Madeleine Gurdon, reportedly felt she could no longer go on as his health and behavior deteriorated. Seeking help, Lloyd Webber initially checked into a clinic, but ultimately found solace and success through the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

Today, the composer is an active participant in AA, attending daily meetings across his homes in London, Hampshire, and New York. He spoke warmly of the equality he finds in those rooms, even recalling a favorite meeting in St. Louis where he felt entirely at home. As part of his commitment to his new life, he is currently auctioning off the remainder of his extensive wine collection. This personal transformation coincides with a “Webbernaissance” in his professional life, with innovative revivals of his classics and his new musical, The Illusionist, slated for a September 2026 opening in London.
