Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper, André Onana, has been left out of the squad for today’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United, following what has been described as a “difficult week” for the Cameroonian shot-stopper.
According to renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Onana was informed of the decision shortly after United’s UEFA Europa League fixture against Olympique Lyon. Manager Rúben Amorim reportedly advised the goalkeeper to take a short mental break from football in order to “disconnect” and recharge.
“André Onana won’t even be on the bench for Man United today as Rúben Amorim wanted him to disconnect from football after a difficult week,” Romano posted on X.
Jamie Jackson of The Guardian confirmed Onana’s absence, noting that he did not travel with the team to Newcastle.
In his absence, summer signing Altay Bayındır will step into the spotlight, making his long-awaited Premier League debut. The Turkish international, who joined from Fenerbahçe, has been patiently waiting for his chance — and now gets a golden opportunity to impress at a crucial stage of the season.
Onana is expected to rejoin the squad for Thursday’s second leg of the Europa League tie, as Manchester United look to progress further in the competition.
