In a recent appearance on The New York Times Podcast, André 3000 opened up about the unexpected leak of his collaboration with Kanye West, “Life of the Party,” and his thoughts on the situation. The track, which was initially slated for West’s Donda album, was leaked by Drake during his SiriusXM radio show, leaving fans in shock.
André 3000 admitted his surprise at the leak, saying, “I was like, ‘Woah!’ I actually don’t understand why he did it… I kind of have to thank Drake for letting that song see the light of day.” Despite the unconventional release, 3000 expressed gratitude for the song’s exposure, which ultimately made it onto the deluxe version of Donda after being left off the original album.
The track “Life of the Party” was a highly anticipated collaboration between the two rap legends, and it quickly became a talking point when it was excluded from the initial release of Donda. While Drake’s leak was controversial, it gave fans a glimpse into the creative process behind one of the year’s most talked-about albums.
In the same podcast, André 3000 also spoke about the personal connection he felt to Donda, explaining how he could relate to the album’s theme of loss. Kanye West dedicated the album to his late mother, Mrs. Donda West, and André 3000 shared that he lost his own mother in 2013. This emotional connection played a role in their decision to remove André’s verse from “Life of the Party,” as it contained explicit language that West felt was inconsistent with the album’s reverent tone.
The candid interview revealed the deep bond between the two artists and their mutual respect for each other’s experiences and artistry. Despite the drama surrounding the track’s release, it’s clear that André 3000 and Kanye West’s collaboration continues to resonate with fans, solidifying Donda as an album shaped by personal loss, artistry, and the unexpected twists of the music industry.
