Lagos is set to become the epicenter of African cinema as the 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) takes place on November 2, 2024, at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Ikeja. Grammy-nominated Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti and award-winning singer 9ice will headline the musical performances, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening celebrating the continent’s cinematic achievements.
Organized by the Africa Film Academy (AFA), this year’s AMAA will honor the resilience and growth of African cinema, welcoming over 60 industry icons from across Africa. Tony Anih, AMAA’s COO, expressed his excitement about the milestone event, which he says will showcase some of Africa’s finest creatives. The night will feature a rich musical lineup, including performances by Ghana’s Adina Thembi and Nigeria’s Yinka Davies, with Ghanaian guitarist Naird adding a unique musical flair.
Legendary actors like Lydia Forson from Ghana, Chinedu Ikeduze from Nigeria, and Burkina Faso’s Charles Koutou will be among the notable attendees. Hosting duties will be shared by Nigeria’s Segun Arinze and Ghana’s Joselyn Dumas, who will lead the evening alongside Africa’s celebrated musicians, bringing together the arts in a remarkable display.
The celebration will also include the African Legends Night on November 1 at Amore Garden in Lekki, where the AFA will pay tribute to African creatives and commemorate Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, AMAA’s late founder. Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, an AFA board member, reflected on the event as a fulfillment of her dream to uplift African talent and unite the industry.
With a lineup of celebrated actors, musicians, and industry leaders, the 20th AMAA promises to be a historic evening celebrating the best of African cinema and culture.
