A spring break trip to Spain has ended in heartbreaking tragedy. James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama junior from Elmhurst, Illinois, was found dead Thursday in Barcelona, days after vanishing from a beachfront nightclub. Catalan police recovered his body from the Mediterranean Sea near Somorrostro Beach at approximately 6 p.m. local time, in roughly four meters of water. The discovery came just hours after authorities located his wallet floating in the same area, confirming the worst fears of a family that had spent three agonizing days searching for answers.

Gracey had traveled to Barcelona over spring break to visit friends studying abroad. On Monday night, March 16, he went with a group to the nightclub Shôko, a popular beachfront venue in the Vila Olímpica neighborhood, ranked among the world’s top nightclubs. Around 3 a.m. Tuesday, he became separated from his friends. Fraternity brother Cavin McLay said Gracey wanted to stay longer at the club while others headed back to their Airbnb on Ronda de Sant Pere. He never made it home.

Security camera footage reviewed by police showed Gracey leaving the club with another person—a detail that initially led investigators to suspect foul play might be involved . A witness later told authorities they saw a young man walking toward the sea on the beach adjacent to the nightclub in the early morning hours.

The investigation took multiple turns over the following days. Police found Gracey’s wallet floating off Somorrostro Beach, just a few hundred feet from the nightclub . His phone was also recovered—according to his mother Therese, it was discovered when police arrested someone, though it remains unclear whether the individual was connected to Gracey’s disappearance or detained for unrelated reasons.

The Mossos d’Esquadra deployed its Aquatic and Underwater Units along with drones to search the waters near where Gracey was last seen . On Thursday evening, divers located a body in the water, which was officially confirmed to belong to Gracey shortly after recovery . Police believe he may have fallen from a rocky outcrop into the sea after leaving the club, with investigators now treating the death as a likely accident rather than foul play.

Gracey was the eldest of five children, a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago, and a junior at the University of Alabama, where he served as chaplain and philanthropy chairman for his Theta Chi fraternity chapter. Friends described him as a mentor to younger brothers who guided others on their spiritual journey.

His family released a statement following the discovery of his body, asking for privacy as they grieve. “We are so grateful for the kindness and concern that has been shown for our family during this incredibly difficult time,” they said. “We have made the decision to pause media interviews at this time to focus on being together and caring for one another”.

The University of Alabama confirmed it has been in contact with Gracey’s family throughout the ordeal. “UA staff are in touch with the family and those associated with them to offer support and assistance in any way possible,” a university spokesperson said.

Theta Chi International Fraternity CEO Mike Mayer extended the organization’s condolences. “The prayers of the brotherhood of Theta Chi are with Jimmy and all who love him,” he said in a statement.

Gracey’s aunt, Beth Marren O’Reilly, captured the family’s devastation. “You keep thinking that you’re going to wake up from this and it’s a terrible nightmare,” she told the Associated Press. “You never thought it could be our family. And here we are”.
