Ghanaian media personality and Guinness World Record hopeful Afua Asantewaa has revealed that her team originally planned to hold her second sing-a-thon attempt in New York City’s Times Square—a surprising twist following her controversial second attempt in Kumasi last December.
From Accra to Times Square?
After making headlines with her widely publicized first sing-a-thon in Accra in December 2023, Asantewaa had bigger ambitions. In a recent video, she shared that her team, including her manager and Global Media Alliance, had mapped out plans to take the challenge to the heart of New York City.
“The interesting part is, those who know, know that we were planning to host the second attempt at Times Square in New York. My team, my manager, and Global Media Alliance were all aware,” she revealed.
Kumasi Attempt: Publicity Woes & Backlash
Instead of the grand NYC stage, Asantewaa’s second attempt took place in Kumasi in December 2024—but it didn’t capture the same hype. Unlike her first attempt, which had massive support, the Kumasi event faced low public engagement, limited media coverage, and harsh social media criticism.
A frustrated Asantewaa addressed her critics in a fiery social media rant, calling out those who attacked her online but failed to take real action.
“You think I’m NPP, and that they gave me $1 billion, which is never the case. You’re threatening me? Some of you even messaged me saying, ‘You’re lucky you didn’t do it in Accra.’ Why didn’t you come to Kumasi to stop it then?” she questioned.
Over 120 Hours of Singing
Despite the backlash, Asantewaa completed the challenge, singing for over 120 hours from December 21 to December 26, 2024. Whether her efforts will earn her a Guinness World Recordremains to be seen, but her resilience is undeniable.
What’s Next for Afua Asantewaa?
With Times Square still on her mind, could she attempt a third sing-a-thon on an international stage? As controversy swirls around her second attempt, one thing is certain—Afua Asantewaa isn’t backing down anytime soon.
