A$AP Rocky’s upcoming trial has unexpectedly turned the spotlight on his relationship with Rihanna, sparking debates about their marital status during a pre-trial hearing on Wednesday, January 15.
The rapper, born Rakim Mayers, is preparing to face a gun assault trial next week, stemming from allegations that he shot his former friend, A$AP Relli, in 2021. As jury selection nears, Judge Mark S. Arnold addressed preliminary matters, including whether potential jurors are familiar with Rocky or Rihanna, the global icon and mother of his two children.
The courtroom took an intriguing turn when Judge Arnold inquired about Rihanna’s title during the trial. Joe Tacopina, Rocky’s lawyer, referred to her as his “common-law wife” but admitted uncertainty about their official marital status.
Prosecutor John Lewin objected, asserting Rihanna should only be referred to as Rocky’s wife if they are legally married. Judge Arnold concluded the matter decisively: “If they are legally married anywhere, she will be his wife. If not, she is his significant other.”
While Rocky often calls Rihanna his wife—famously portraying a wedding in one of his music videos—their marital status remains unconfirmed. The couple went public in 2020 and now share two children: RZA Athelston Mayers, born in May 2022, and Riot Rose Mayers, born in August 2023.
Rocky Prepares for Courtroom Battle
Rocky’s attorney hinted the rapper might testify in his own defence, stating, “He’s eager to tell his story.” Prosecutors allege that Rocky shot A$AP Relli during a heated 2021 confrontation, with one shot grazing Relli’s hand. While video evidence shows an altercation, it does not capture the shooting itself.
Tacopina remains steadfast in his client’s innocence, predicting an acquittal when jury selection begins on Tuesday, January 21.
As courtroom drama unfolds, fans and legal observers alike are eager to see how this high-stakes trial impacts both Rocky’s future and the public fascination with his relationship with Rihanna. Stay tuned for updates!
