The rape investigation involving football superstar Kylian Mbappe has been officially closed by Swedish authorities due to insufficient evidence. The probe was initiated after a woman alleged that the Real Madrid forward assaulted her in a Stockholm hotel room during a night out in October.
Prosecutor Marina Chirakova confirmed on Thursday that the case had been dropped, stating Mbappe had not even been “notified of suspicion of a crime.” Swedish police found no grounds to continue the investigation.
Mbappe, 25, had vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them “fake news.” Speaking to French TV channel Canal+, he expressed disbelief over the claims, adding, “These are things that come into your life out of nowhere. It’s incomprehensible. I never considered myself involved.”
Despite his initial surprise, Mbappe stated he was willing to cooperate if contacted by Swedish authorities, but no such request was made.
The case had sparked widespread speculation, but with the investigation now shut down, the French forward can focus on his career without the shadow of the allegations hanging over him.
