The college sports community is mourning a devastating loss after 20-year-old MicahJo Barnett, a junior running back for William Jewell College, died following a sudden medical emergency during his team’s season-opening game against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri.
The tragedy unfolded early in the contest shortly after Barnett scored the opening touchdown of the game.
Sudden Collapse: Roughly 20 minutes after kickoff, Barnett collapsed on the William Jewell sideline. Witnesses reported he appeared to experience severe, seizure-like symptoms.
Immediate Response: Medical staff and local fire department paramedics responded instantly on the field, attempting resuscitation before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.
Game Postponed and Cancelled: Officials promptly suspended and ultimately canceled the game following the medical emergency.
Barnett, a business administration major and former high school state champion at Liberty North, was remembered by coaches, teammates, and rival programs alike. William Jewell College released an official statement extending deep prayers to Barnett’s family and announced campus counseling and candlelight vigil services to honor his memory.
