Why ABC’s High Potential Won’t Return to TV Until 2027

Fans of Morgan Gillory and her uncanny investigative instincts will have to wait a little longer for new episodes. On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, ABC officially unveiled its fall 2026-2027 schedule, confirming that its top-rated procedural drama, High Potential, is being held for a midseason premiere in 2027. While the show is currently the network’s #1 scripted series, several strategic and creative factors have pushed the High Potential Season 3 release date 2027 window back.

The decision to delay the show’s return is primarily a tactical one by ABC’s scheduling team. Ari Goldman, the Senior VP of Content Strategy, explained that previous seasons suffered from a “choppy” viewing experience due to holiday breaks and major live events. By holding the series until January 2027, the network aims to provide a largely uninterrupted, weekly run of episodes.

This “midseason anchor” strategy is also designed to help the show avoid a particularly crowded television landscape. The first quarter of 2027 is set to feature a massive block of live events, including the expanded College Football Playoff, the Super Bowl, and relocated awards ceremonies like the Grammys and the Oscars. ABC plans to use the high viewership from these events to fuel the promotion of its most successful dramas.

Beyond the schedule, High Potential is undergoing significant changes behind the scenes. Following the departure of showrunner Todd Harthan after Season 2, the series has welcomed Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face, Suits) to lead the production. This transition period allows the new showrunners time to settle into the writers’ room and navigate the narrative fallout from the Season 2 finale.

The extra time also allows for adjustments to the cast and plot. Fans are eagerly waiting to see the fate of Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey), whose character’s life hung in the balance during the cliffhanger conclusion of the previous season. The delay offers flexibility for potential guest appearances or structural changes following these major shifts in the unit’s leadership.

In the absence of High Potential this fall, ABC is utilizing its coveted Tuesday 10 p.m. slot traditionally bolstered by the lead-in of Dancing with the Stars to launch newer content. The detective drama R.J. Decker, starring Scott Speedman, will take over the slot. Goldman noted that High Potential has become such a dominant hit that it “didn’t necessarily need the lead-in support” anymore, giving the network the confidence that its massive audience will follow the show to its new 2027 home.
