Reality star and billionaire entrepreneur Kim Kardashian is at the center of a growing public outcry following her latest move in a long-running defamation case. After successfully defending a lawsuit brought by a New York man named Ivan Cantu, Kardashian’s legal team has officially requested that the court order the plaintiff to reimburse her for $145,000 in legal expenses.
The controversy stems from a February 2024 social media error where Kardashian, while advocating for a Texas death row inmate also named Ivan Cantu, mistakenly shared a photograph of the New York-based project manager instead. Although the post was removed within hours, Cantu filed a lawsuit alleging defamation and emotional distress. While a judge dismissed the case in November 2025 under anti-SLAPP statutes designed to protect free speech the current Kim Kardashian legal battle backlash intensified this week when she sought to recover her high-priced attorney fees.
On April 13, 2026, Ivan Cantu filed a new motion begging the judge to reconsider the mandatory fee award. In the filing, Cantu’s legal team argued that while Kardashian is worth an estimated $1.9 billion, the demand for $145,000 is “ruinous” for an average family. The motion highlights the vast wealth disparity between the two parties, suggesting that a mandatory fee of this size serves as a punishment for an “innocent victim” of a billionaire’s admitted mistake.
Social media has been flooded with criticism, with many questioning why a billionaire would pursue a five-figure sum from a private citizen. Critics argue that the move contradicts Kardashian’s public image as a champion for criminal justice reform and empathy. As the judge prepares to rule on the motion to cap the fees potentially as low as $5,000 the case remains a focal point for discussions on legal equity and the power of celebrity influence.
