The Chicago Bulls have officially severed ties with guard Jaden Ivey. The decision comes after the 24-year-old player posted a series of controversial videos on social media containing anti-LGBTQ sentiments and sharp criticism of the league’s inclusive initiatives. The move marks a sudden end to Ivey’s tenure in Chicago, a stint that lasted less than two months after his high-profile acquisition.

On Monday, the Bulls organization announced that they had waived Ivey for “conduct detrimental to the team.” This NBA player conduct release update follows a weekend where Ivey livestreamed multiple lengthy rants on Instagram. In the footage, the former top-five pick specifically targeted the NBA’s celebration of Pride Month, labeling the events as a “celebration of unrighteousness.” He further questioned why the league promotes these values on billboards and in the streets while allegedly silencing opposing religious views.

Ivey’s departure is particularly striking given the resources Chicago invested to acquire him. The Bulls landed Ivey in early February as part of a blockbuster three-team trade involving the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves. Despite the initial excitement surrounding his arrival, Ivey’s time on the court was limited due to a sore knee that eventually led the team to shut him down for the remainder of the season just last week.

Bulls Head Coach Billy Donovan addressed the situation prior to Monday’s game against San Antonio, emphasizing that Ivey’s comments do not align with the organization’s culture. Donovan noted that the team employs individuals from “all different walks of life” and expects a high level of professional respect among all staff. Amid the controversy, many fans and analysts have also expressed concern for Ivey’s well-being, noting his recent history of dealing with depression and childhood trauma.

While Ivey remains a talented prospect who averaged 11.5 points during his brief Chicago stint, his future in the league is now uncertain as teams weigh his on-court potential against his recent off-court conduct.
