Alt-pop phenomenon Melanie Martinez has officially released her highly anticipated new album, HADES. The 18-track project arrived on March 27, marking the singer’s first full-length release in three years and the start of a bold new creative chapter.

The double album is a scathing social commentary, wrapped in Martinez’s signature dark pop production. “I started this album thinking I was writing a futuristic dystopia,” she explained in a statement, “but I realized I was just documenting the world we’re already living in.” HADES serves as a cracked mirror, examining destructive patterns of power, corruption, and patriarchy that already exist in modern society.

The album’s rollout began earlier this year with the lead single “POSSESSION,” which became Martinez’s fastest-streaming release to date. The track amassed over 2.7 million Spotify streams in its first 24 hours and has since surpassed 33 million plays. A second single, “Disney Princess,” followed, setting the stage for an album that critics are calling her most politically charged work yet.

HADES is a conceptual journey through themes of misogyny, religious hypocrisy, and economic anxiety. Tracks like “White Boy With a Gun” use deceptively gentle indie-pop arrangements to deliver sharp lyrical critiques, while “The Vatican” blends haunting hymns with synth-driven beats to call out institutional corruption.

The album opens with “Garbage,” which juxtaposes birdsong with explosions and crowd screams, a sonic representation of information overload. Other standout tracks include the gritty “Grudges,” the bass-heavy “Uncanny Valley,” which critiques AI and beauty standards, and the melancholic finale, “The Last Two People on Earth”.

True to Martinez’s style, HADES is more than just a listening experience. The 30-year-old artist, who first rose to fame on The Voice in 2012, has built a career on elaborate visual storytelling. She has confirmed that an accompanying full-length film will be released to complement the album’s narrative.

With over 30 billion career streams and more than 62 million followers across platforms, Martinez is celebrating the release with a small run of special performances. She kicked things off with a show at New York’s United Palace and has a scheduled appearance at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on April 8, where she will discuss her creative process.
