Controversial Malaysian rapper Namewee (Wee Meng Chee) has been officially charged with drug use and possession, following his arrest at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last month. Police confirmed the charges on Monday, November 3, 2025, which escalate the legal challenges for the outspoken artist known for his satirical and often provocative content.
Namewee is facing two serious counts under Malaysia’s stringent Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The charges include possession of nine pills suspected to be ecstasy (MDMA), and personal drug use, after a urine screening reportedly tested positive for a “cocktail of drugs” including amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine, and THC. If convicted on the possession charge, the rapper could face up to five years in jail and be subject to caning (rotan).

The rapper, however, has maintained his innocence. On October 24, Namewee pleaded not guilty to both charges in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates Court and was released on bail. He later publicly stated on social media that he neither used nor carried drugs, claiming, “The truth will be out when the police report is released.”

The Namewee Drug Charges Malaysia controversy adds another layer of scrutiny to the rapper’s activities; his arrest and the ensuing investigation occurred amidst a parallel police probe into the death of a Taiwanese influencer found in the same hotel during a video shoot with Namewee. The case is currently fixed for mention in December, as the Malaysian public awaits the outcome of the high-profile legal battle.
