“We want to honor the game.”

As production gears up for the highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series on Amazon Prime Video, showrunner Ronald D. Moore (OutlanderBattlestar Galactica) is assuring fans that the adaptation will remain true to the beloved PlayStation franchise — capturing both its emotional depthand epic scale.

In a recent interview with IGN, Moore explained that the creative team is focused on emulating the tone of the game, specifically its 2018 reboot that followed Kratos and his son Atreus on a deeply personal and mythic journey through the Norse realms.

“The tone of the show is trying to emulate the tone of the game,” Moore said. “There’s this epic journey, this heartfelt story of these two men setting out on this thing to honor the memory of his wife, Atreus’ mother.”

A Story With Heart, History, and Spectacle

Moore emphasized that the show won’t just focus on the brutal action that made God of War famous — it will dig into the emotional complexities of Kratos, a god haunted by his past, and Atreus, a boy trying to understand the father he barely knows.

“So it has this emotional heart, but there’s this sense of history of who Kratos is, this mystery about his past, what he represents, the emotions that he’s going through.”

While the show will embrace the spectacle and mythological grandeur fans expect, Moore stressed that it will also explore the father-son dynamic that became central to the 2018 reboot’s success.

Amazon Is All In — Season 2 Already in the Works

Though filming is set to begin in 2026, the momentum behind the series is already strong. According to Moore, Amazon has greenlit a second season before the first has even entered full production — a strong vote of confidence in the vision for the show.

Faithful, Not Frame-by-Frame

Fans of the franchise can expect a respectful adaptation, but not a carbon copy of the game. While certain story beats and character arcs will be retained — especially the emotional journey of Atreus — the series will also expand on the God of War universe in new ways suited to TV storytelling.

“We want to honor the game and what they laid out for Atreus’ journey. Here’s a young man who doesn’t know his father very well, that sets out on this mission, and along the way they learn about each other,” Moore added.
