Legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh, celebrated as the world’s oldest marathoner, has tragically passed away at the age of 114 after a hit-and-run incident in Punjab, India.

According to local police, Singh was crossing a road in his native village of Beas Pind when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle on Monday, July 14. Locals rushed him to hospital, but he sadly did not survive.

Fauja Singh defied age and expectation, rising to international fame by taking up long-distance running at the age of 89. His inspirational story, spirit, and stamina captivated the world as he went on to run numerous marathons — some even past the age of 100 — earning him a place in the hearts of millions and a symbol of what’s possible at any age.

Tributes Pour In

His UK-based running club, Sikhs In The City, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement shared by friend and club leader Harmander Singh:

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our icon of humanity and powerhouse of positivity, Fauja Singh, has passed away in India.

His running club and charity Sikhs In The City will be devoting all of its events until the Fauja Singh Birthday Challenge on March 29, 2026, to celebrate his life of success and achievements.”

A Life of Relentless Determination

Born in 1911 in rural Punjab, Fauja Singh lived a quiet life as a farmer before relocating to Ilford, London in 1992. But it wasn’t until he was widowed and looking for purpose in his later years that he discovered a passion for running.

What began as a way to cope with grief became a global phenomenon. He completed marathons in cities like London, Toronto, and New York, setting world records in multiple age categories, and became a Guinness World Records icon — though some records remained unofficial due to lack of birth documentation.

Even more remarkable, Singh was a vegetarian, teetotal, and deeply spiritual man who often credited his long life to clean living and positive thinking.

Global Recognition

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led national tributes, calling Singh:

“An exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Fauja Singh inspired millions with his resilience, discipline, and love for life.”

Across the UK and beyond, athletes, activists, and fans have mourned the loss of a man who showed the world that age is no barrier to greatness.

Fauja Singh’s legacy will endure not only through his athletic milestones but in the hope, courage, and joy he brought to people around the world — proving it’s never too late to start something extraordinary.

May his soul rest in peace.
