The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., has commended the bold decision to take Nigeria’s premier music awards, The Headies, to the U.S. in 2022 and 2023 — a move he says underscored the unstoppable global influence of Nigerian music.
Speaking at the Headies Pre-Award Reception hosted by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria for the third consecutive year, Ambassador Mills praised the show’s expansion and the remarkable impact of Afrobeats around the world. The exclusive Lagos event drew an elite crowd — from nominated artists and entertainment moguls to policymakers, U.S. exchange alumni, diplomats, and business leaders.
“We’ve seen a remarkable rise in Nigerian artists performing at sold-out shows across U.S. arenas and clinching global awards,” Mills said. “Taking the Headies to America was a powerful move that recognised Africa’s sound as a global force.”
He also acknowledged how American platforms like Apple Music, YouTube, Paramount, and major record labels such as Empire, Atlantic, and Universal have helped amplify Nigeria’s musical voice globally, fostering economic growth and mutual prosperity.
The Rise of Afrobeats & Strategic Collaborations
Headies executive producer Ayo Animashaun echoed Ambassador Mills’ sentiments, emphasizing the powerful momentum of Afrobeats and the growing importance of international collaborations in securing its place on the global stage.
As the evening’s highlight, singer Beriola delivered a captivating performance, reinforcing the message of cultural pride and cross-border synergy.
U.S. Government’s Continued Support for Nigerian Creatives
Ambassador Mills also spotlighted new U.S. Department of State initiatives introduced in 2024, including the American Music Mentorship Programme, launched in partnership with the Recording Academy (Grammys). Three Nigerian creatives participated in the inaugural edition, with one selected to head a regional office in Nigeria for a U.S.-based media group — a clear testament to the programme’s potential in bridging both nations’ entertainment industries.
“We remain committed to strengthening Nigeria’s creative ecosystem — from mentorship to market access and sustainable growth,” said Mills.
The Headies’ growing global footprint and the U.S.-Nigeria entertainment synergy continue to rewrite the narrative — not just for Nigerian music, but for the continent’s creative industries at large.
