Nigerian music star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has ignited controversy following his remarks about his influence on Afrobeats and its global expansion. The “Calm Down” hitmaker expressed frustration during an interview on The Breakfast Club, stating he feels overlooked for his significant contributions to the genre.
Rema cited achievements such as his performances in three packed arenas in India and the success of his song “Ozeba,” which landed the number two spot on Rolling Stone’s 40 Best Afropop Songs of 2024. According to the Mavin artist, his accomplishments have played a role in reshaping Afrobeats’ global recognition, even influencing the creation of a dedicated Afrobeats award category.
“My impact in Afrobeats to the world is huge, it is not by hit songs,” Rema remarked, adding that he feels he deserves acknowledgment alongside Nigeria’s “Big Three”—Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid.
He also hinted that his younger age may be why he’s not receiving the accolades he believes he’s earned. “Must I be 30 years old before they give me my flowers?” Rema questioned.
Fans React to Rema’s Claims
The comments section has been buzzing with mixed reactions:
• @Obaji_007: “U do deserve but not like being with the big 4.”
• @Esther_oflfc: “You need flowers? Go and get [them] in the market.”
• @Ferdinand: “Na streaming era Dey gas ham. He’s just enjoying the hard work of the legends.”
• @SherifUsman7: “You’re just 5 years in the game, you’re looking for flowers. If Wizkid starts talking like this, many hearts will be broken.”
While Rema’s passion is undeniable, many fans argue that his time will come with more years in the industry. Others believe his achievements already speak volumes about his talent and potential to solidify his legacy in Afrobeats.
What do you think—does Rema deserve more recognition for his contributions, or is it too soon?
