Sean “Diddy” Combs has often shared the emotional toll that the tragic death of his close friend and collaborator, The Notorious B.I.G., has had on him. But recent revelations from his former bodyguard, Gene Deal, have added new layers of controversy and speculation to the already mysterious circumstances surrounding Biggie’s passing.
A Night of Tragedy: What Happened to Biggie?
On March 9, 1997, Biggie attended a party with Diddy in Los Angeles. Leaving the event in separate vehicles, Biggie was tragically shot at a stoplight by an unknown assailant. Diddy and Deal rushed Biggie to the hospital, but the rapper was pronounced dead shortly after.
While Diddy appeared “stunned” at the hospital, Deal has since suggested that there might be more to the story. Speaking in the documentary Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy, Deal openly wondered if Diddy might have had a deeper connection to the events leading to Biggie’s death.
Bodyguard’s Concerns: “He Could Have Had Something to Do With It”
Deal recalled that Diddy exhibited unusual behavior in the week leading up to the tragedy, describing him as “anxious” and insistent on Biggie attending the party despite the rapper’s plans to travel to London.
“Big was telling people he had to be in London, but Puff was telling people, ‘He ain’t going to London,’” Deal said.
Deal further expressed concerns about the lack of security at the party. Despite warning Diddy about the risks, his concerns were allegedly brushed aside. “I told him, ‘We don’t have no security,’” Deal shared. “But Puff didn’t want to hear it.”
Diddy’s Guilt and Regret
Diddy has publicly admitted feeling a level of responsibility for Biggie’s death, particularly because he didn’t push harder for Biggie to leave Los Angeles.
“He was supposed to go to London that night, and I let him talk me into not going,” Diddy said during a 2017 appearance on The Wendy Williams Show. “That’s something that really bothered me throughout my life. My gut told me to get him on the plane.”
Claims of Financial Disputes
In addition to the tragedy, other controversies have surfaced regarding Biggie’s relationship with Diddy. Fellow Bad Boy artist Mark Curry alleged in his book Dancing With the Devil that Biggie’s financial situation was far from ideal.
“After Biggie signed the contracts that Puff forced on him, he walked away with only $25,000,” Curry claimed. He further alleged that Diddy tried to cover up Biggie’s financial struggles by announcing he’d provide millions to the late rapper’s family after his death.
Lingering Questions
While the mystery of The Notorious B.I.G.’s death remains unsolved, the testimonies and allegations continue to fuel speculation. For Diddy, the loss of Biggie is a haunting memory, one marked by regret and unanswered questions. As the world continues to celebrate Biggie’s legacy, the shadow of his untimely death looms large, leaving fans and loved ones searching for closure.
