SZA has expressed her deep love and admiration for her late friend and collaborator, Mac Miller, in a heartfelt message shared on social media. The tribute comes in the wake of the release of Miller’s second posthumous album, Balloonerism.
Taking to Twitter, the Drew Barrymore singer wrote:
“I love my friend. I miss my friend. Grateful he saw something in me before most and treated me [with] love from day 1. Wish he could see how right about everything he truly was. Please go stream Balloonerism RIGHT NOW.”
A Friendship of Mutual Respect
SZA and Mac Miller shared a close bond that extended beyond their artistic collaborations. Reflecting on their friendship, SZA has consistently praised Miller’s kindness and unwavering support. Following his tragic death in 2018 due to a drug overdose, she described him as “forever a genuine friend” and “the most kind, supportive person ever.”
Her connection to Miller’s legacy was further cemented when she joined stars like Chance the Rapper and Travis Scott for the Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life concert held in his memory.
Balloonerism: A Labor of Love
Balloonerism, released on January 17, marks an important chapter in celebrating Mac Miller’s musical journey. According to his estate, the album was a project of great significance to the late rapper, one he had worked on since 2014.
“We believe the project showcases both the breadth of his musical talents and fearlessness as an artist,” Miller’s estate shared in a statement. They noted his passion for the project, which included commissioning artwork and ongoing discussions about its release.
SZA features on the track “DJ’s Chord Organ,” adding another layer of connection to the album. The release also includes an accompanying animated short film, further illustrating Miller’s creativity and vision.
Mac Miller’s Enduring Impact
Balloonerism follows 2020’s Circles, the first posthumous album from the Small Worlds artist. Praised for its introspective themes and inventive production, Circles left fans with a bittersweet reminder of Miller’s immense talent.
SZA’s Continued Success
While honoring Miller’s legacy, SZA continues to make waves in her own career. Her recent release, Lana, a deluxe edition of her 2022 LP SOS, features collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Lil Yachty, and Benny Blanco. The album has secured nine Grammy nominations and achieved triple Platinum certification in the US.
As SZA encourages fans to stream Balloonerism, her tribute underscores the timeless bond between artists and the enduring power of their shared legacies.
