Amid the devastating wildfires ravaging Los Angeles County, The Weeknd—born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye—has stepped up with a generous $1 million donation to aid victims and support relief efforts.

The Canadian superstar announced on Friday (Jan. 17) that his donation would be divided among three key organizations: the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, GoFundMe’s Wildfire Relief Fund, and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. These funds will support first responders battling the flames and provide relief for the tens of thousands displaced by evacuation orders.

This act of generosity follows the cancellation of his highly anticipated Rose Bowl concert, originally scheduled for Jan. 25, and the postponement of his upcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, now set for release on Jan. 31. In a heartfelt statement, The Weeknd explained,

“The city has always been a profound source of inspiration for me, and my thoughts are with everyone impacted during this difficult time. My focus remains on supporting the recovery of these communities and aiding its incredible people as they rebuild.”

The donation also aligns with his XO Humanitarian Fund in partnership with World Food Program USA, reinforcing his ongoing commitment to charitable causes.

Music Industry Bands Together

The Weeknd isn’t alone in his efforts. Numerous artists and organizations have rallied around the wildfire crisis:

• Taylor Swift has supported various charitable efforts for victims.

• Doja Cat launched a custom merch line benefiting the American Red Cross.

• Industry giants like ASCAP, Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group have established emergency funds.

• A FireAid benefit concert, set for Jan. 30 at the Intuit Dome, will feature stars like Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, and more.

With the wildfires claiming at least 25 lives and destroying countless structures, The Weeknd’s donation is a beacon of hope, emphasizing the power of community and solidarity during challenging times.
