Afrobeats sensation Spyro has opened up about the challenges of publicly embracing his faith in the Nigerian music industry. In a candid conversation with Echo Room, the Who’s Your Guy crooner revealed how proclaiming Jesus Christ as part of his brand has led to discrimination and lack of support from key players in the industry.

Spyro shared an anecdote from R&B star-turned-pastor Banky W, who warned him about the hurdles of blending faith with fame. According to Spyro, Banky told him that his troubles in the music business began the moment he proclaimed Christ. “When he was a ‘bad boy,’ everything was going well,” Spyro recalled. “But as soon as he decided to go the godly way, the war started.”

Spyro admits that his “Jesus boy” image has drawn criticism and even cost him goodwill within the music scene. “My biggest challenge right now is discrimination,” he said. “I’ve received the biggest criticisms because of my brand. If you’re truthful, how many media moguls support me when I drop songs? Apart from blogs I pay, who else posts me? Yet they post other artists who aren’t doing as well as I am. Why? The answer is simple—once you declare Christ publicly, you’re in a battle.”

The singer lamented that the industry feels “designed to pull you down” when you choose to represent faith openly. Despite the hurdles, Spyro remains resolute in his path, determined to stay true to his beliefs while pursuing his music career.

Spyro’s bold stance highlights the tension between faith and fame in a competitive industry where personal convictions can sometimes clash with mainstream expectations. For Spyro, however, the message is clear: the fight is worth it.
