Raheem Sterling’s loan move to Arsenal in the summer was meant to bolster their attacking options, but his role at the Emirates has been limited, sparking questions over the future of his loan deal. While Arsenal have no intention of cutting short the agreement, they are reviewing their options, particularly with Premier League rules restricting their ability to make further domestic loan signings.
Sterling, who moved across London from Chelsea after being deemed surplus to Enzo Maresca’s plans, has struggled for regular game time under Mikel Arteta. Despite his experience, having previously worked with Arteta at Manchester City, Sterling has made only sporadic appearances, scoring just once in 11 matches, with his minutes mainly coming from the bench.
Arsenal’s current Premier League rules allow them to have only two loan players from domestic rivals, with Neto, the Bournemouth goalkeeper, also on loan. If an opportunity arises to bring in another player, especially in attack, it’s likely that Neto’s loan would be the first to be revisited.
Arteta has acknowledged the limited opportunities Sterling has had, stating, “I would like to see him more… He’s trying his best… Now it’s time for me to give him more minutes.” Despite the lack of starts, Arteta is determined to integrate Sterling into the team, hoping he can make a significant impact.
