Wayne Rooney’s time as manager of Plymouth Argyle has come to an end, with the former England star departing by mutual agreement just seven months after taking the reins. His tenure saw a challenging run in the Championship, managing only four wins while enduring 13 defeats across 23 matches.
The tipping point came after a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United, marking the team’s sixth consecutive loss in a winless streak that ultimately sealed Rooney’s fate. Despite his defiant stance following the match, both parties agreed it was time for a change to prioritize the club’s future.
Rooney’s appointment in May was met with optimism, as fans hoped his reputation and attacking football philosophy would breathe new life into the squad. However, the season told a different story, with Plymouth struggling on both ends of the pitch. They scored the joint fewest goals in the league while conceding more than any team across England’s top four divisions.
This wasn’t Rooney’s first managerial challenge. Before joining Plymouth, his time at Birmingham City ended under similar circumstances, with nine defeats in 15 matches.
Rooney’s departure also sees assistant head coach Mike Phelan and first-team coach Simon Ireland leaving their posts. Stepping in for now are first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards, who will lead the team into their upcoming clash against Bristol City.
