Detroit rapper 42 Dugg is a free man. The 31-year-old artist saw his criminal case collapse Thursday morning after the woman who accused him of making malicious threats failed to show up for his trial. The dismissal means Dion Hayes, as he’s known legally, walks away with no conviction and no jail time, ending a legal saga that began with serious allegations stretching back months.

The case against 42 Dugg was never small. Prosecutors charged him with making threats against a woman between November 2024 and March 2025, alleging he sent messages intended to “terrorize, frighten, intimidate, threaten, harass, molest, annoy, or disturb” her. The woman was reportedly pregnant with his child at the time, and authorities claimed the messages were aimed at pressuring her to get an abortion. He was also accused of threatening physical harm against members of her family.

Hayes pleaded not guilty in January. If convicted, he faced six months behind bars and a $1,000 fine.

The trial kicked off Thursday morning in Michigan. But before any testimony could begin, the proceedings hit a wall, the alleged victim never walked through the courtroom doors. Without the key witness, prosecutors had no case. The judge dismissed the charges.

Hayes’ attorney, Steven Scharg, didn’t hold back. “Mr. Hayes always maintained his innocence and we were prepared to proceed to trial today since these allegations were not true,” he told said.

This dismissal closes one chapter, but 42 Dugg’s legal history is far from clean. The rapper has previously served time in prison, in October 2023, he was released after a six-month sentence for violating bond terms in a 2019 illegal weapons possession case.

Even during this recent case, prosecutors tried revoking his bond, claiming he traveled across several states for performances, including a Mardi Gras kickoff event in Louisiana, while on probation for a federal case out of Georgia that carried travel restrictions. Hayes claimed a “misunderstanding” and said he believed he was cleared to work.

Through it all, 42 Dugg’s career hasn’t stopped. The CMG and 4PF signee, who inked his deal with Yo Gotti and Lil Baby back in 2019, released his debut album 4eva Us Neva Them in July 2024, featuring Lil Baby, Meek Mill, Jeezy, and Sexyy Red. The project peaked at 76 on the Billboard 200.

With over six million monthly Spotify listeners, he dropped Part 3 in January 2026. Now, with court dates behind him, the “Grace” rapper can focus entirely on music. The case is closed. The witness never came. And 42 Dugg walks.
