The future Hall of Famer isn’t done yet. Travis Kelce has officially agreed to return to the Kansas City Chiefs for his 14th NFL season, signing a one-year contract worth up to $15 million. The announcement, made March 9, 2026, ends months of speculation about whether the 36-year-old tight end would retire or test free agency for the first time in his career.

“HE’S BACK!!! TRAVIS KELCE IS BACK WITH THE CHIEFS FOR YEAR 14,” the official New Heights podcast Instagram account declared, posting an animated clip of Kelce channeling Keanu Reeves in John Wick: “People keep asking if I’m back, and I haven’t really had an answer. But now, yeah, I’m thinkin’ I’m back”.

Kelce’s new contract is structured as a one-year agreement worth $12 million base with incentives that can push the total to $15 million. The deal came together during the NFL’s legal tampering period, just days before the official start of free agency on March 11.

Despite entering the offseason as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career, Kelce never seriously considered leaving Kansas City. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Kelce “would have commanded top dollar in the TE market. But he’d rather stay with the Chiefs, catch passes from Patrick Mahomes, and have a shot at another Super Bowl”.

Kelce’s decision was driven by loyalty and unfinished business. The 2025 season ended in disappointment for Kansas City, a 6-11 record, no playoffs for the first time since 2014, and a season-ending ACL tear for Mahomes in December. For a player who has appeared in five Super Bowls and won three, going out on that note simply wasn’t acceptable.

“I think if my body can heal up and rest up and I can feel content that I can go out there and give it another run, I think I would do it in a heartbeat,” Kelce said on his podcast in January. “I think right now it’s just finding that answer… when it all settles down.”

His fiancée Taylor Swift played a supportive role in the decision. Kelce told The Stephen A. Smith Show in January that Swift was “fully encouraging me to enjoy playing this game”.

Turning 37 in October, Kelce showed last season he still has plenty left. He finished fourth among NFL tight ends with 851 receiving yards and forced nine missed tackles during the regular season—triple his 2024 total . He also reached two significant milestones: becoming the fastest tight end to 13,000 yards and logging 75 receptions for a 10th straight season, tying an NFL record.

His 1,080 career receptions rank eighth in NFL history, and his 13,002 receiving yards are third all-time among tight ends. In the playoffs, he holds the records for most catches (178) and receiving yards (2,078).

Kelce’s quarterback couldn’t hide his excitement. Patrick Mahomes took to Instagram almost immediately after the news broke, posting his signature clock emoji alongside Kelce’s bow-and-arrow emoji, sharing two photos of the dynamic duo together.

The Mahomes-Kelce connection has produced 19 playoff touchdowns, the most of any quarterback-receiver duo in NFL history, and countless unforgettable moments, including the “13 Seconds Game” against Buffalo and three Super Bowl victories.

Kelce’s return provides stability for a Chiefs offense facing significant transition. With Mahomes recovering from ACL surgery and several key free agents, including running backs Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt and receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Hollywood Brown, likely moving on, having number 87 back in the fold is critical.

For Kelce, the 2026 season represents one more chance to add to a legacy already destined for Canton. And with a wedding to Swift scheduled for June 13, it’s shaping up to be a busy year both on and off the field.
