Former Big Brother Africa star Tayo Faniran is reminding fans that the road to success isn’t always paved with glam and gloss. In a heartfelt chat on Nollywood on Radio, the actor, model, and fashion enthusiast opened up about his journey from the streets of Oyo to the continental spotlight.
Tayo, who finished as runner-up in Season 9 of Big Brother Africa, revealed he used to buy and sell second-hand clothes (Okrika) in Kantangua Market before fame knocked on his door.
“I remember those days when I used to go to Kantangua to buy Okrika and re-sell,” he shared. “I would get fabrics, take them to a tailor to make something stylish for me when I couldn’t afford designer labels.”
He proudly emphasized his Yoruba roots and authenticity, saying:
“I’m a thorough Oyo born. I don’t pretend. I’m a Yoruba boy first and foremost, and I don’t hide that.”
Despite having just a Higher National Diploma in Maritime Studies, Tayo noted that he was one of the brightest students in school.
“My teachers always praised my intelligence. They’d tell my parents how smart I was. Even though I’m the least formally educated in my family, I’ve never let that stop me.”
