Porsha Williams is opening up about the health scare that led to an emergency partial hysterectomy. The 45-year-old Real Housewives of Atlanta star revealed that doctors discovered 21 uterine fibroids, including one she said had grown to the size of a cantaloupe. The Porsha Williams hysterectomy came after years of symptoms she initially attributed to perimenopause.
The diagnosis arrived in May while Williams was considering having another child. She had accompanied a friend to discuss freezing her eggs and decided to get checked by her own fertility doctor while there. Williams said she had been experiencing prolonged periods, migraines, extreme fatigue, and mood swings. Doctors later determined the fibroids had significantly affected her birth canal and were putting her bladder at risk.
Williams has dealt with fibroids since her late 20s. She previously revealed that complications from a fibroid contributed to a miscarriage when she was four months pregnant. She said losing the ability to carry another child brought grief, and she acknowledged the stigma she felt around discussing her hysterectomy. Now, she hopes her experience encourages women, particularly Black women, to advocate for their health and seek medical care instead of self-diagnosing changes in their bodies.
