The next chapter in the James Bond saga is officially in motion, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight tapped to write the screenplay for the iconic spy’s next adventure.

According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios has brought in Knight to craft the next installment in the long-running franchise. This follows the recent announcement that acclaimed Dune director Denis Villeneuve will helm the project. However, fans eager to learn who will replace Daniel Craig as 007 may need to wait a while — casting is reportedly on hold while Villeneuve completes Dune: Part Three.

Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing the project through Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films, with Tanya Lapointe serving as executive producer.

Villeneuve, 57, has expressed deep respect for the Bond legacy. In a previous statement, he shared, “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father… I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory.” He added that he intends to “honour the tradition” while paving the way for “many new missions to come.”

Barbara Broccoli, who has been at the creative helm of the Bond films for over four decades, is stepping back from day-to-day involvement. In a recent interview on the Kermode on Film podcast, Broccoli revealed: “I did it for 44 years and I loved every minute of it, but I’m getting up there now and there’s a lot of things I want to do… I have other movies I want to make and other stage shows.”

Meanwhile, speculation is heating up around who might step into the Bond girl role — and all eyes are on Euphoria and Anyone But You star Sydney Sweeney. A source told The Sun on Sunday that Sweeney is currently the top name on the casting list, with Villeneuve reportedly impressed by her rising star power and on-screen versatility.

“They’ve hung out together a lot and he has admired her stratospheric rise,” the insider shared, adding that Sweeney’s mix of athleticism, sex appeal, and acting chops makes her a strong fit for the franchise.

While no release date has been confirmed and key casting decisions are still pending, the combination of Knight’s gritty writing and Villeneuve’s visionary direction signals a bold new era for Bond.
