Wunmi Toriola’s Queen Lateefah, produced and distributed by Cinemax, has soared to become one of Nollywood’s top-grossing films of 2024, pulling in a remarkable N317 million since its September 27 release. This success reflects Nollywood’s growing influence and the changing tastes of Nigerian audiences, who are increasingly drawn to local stories with mass appeal.
Box Office Milestones
The film’s strong debut saw it gross N100.2 million in its first week alone, fueled by word-of-mouth and an engaging storyline that resonated with audiences. By the end of its opening weekend, Queen Lateefah had already earned N58 million, making it the highest-grossing Nigerian film during a non-holiday weekend in 2024.
Building on this momentum:
• The film crossed the N200 million mark within three weeks.
• By October 15, it reached N216 million, ranking among the highest-earning films in Nigerian cinema.
• By the weekend of October 18-20, Queen Lateefah brought in an additional N23.3 million, securing its position just behind The Uprising by Omoni Oboli.
Nollywood’s Growing Appeal
As of November 3, Queen Lateefah officially joined the N300 million club, achieving N317 million in total box office revenue. Cinemax founder Ope Ajayi credits this success to both the film’s mass appeal and Cinemax’s strategic distribution efforts. Ajayi expressed confidence that Queen Lateefah could close out at around N400 million, further underscoring the box office potential of Nollywood productions.
A Future of Global Expansion
Queen Lateefah’s record-setting performance is a testament to Nollywood’s evolving capabilities and the rising demand for Nigerian cinema, both locally and internationally. With plans to expand into global distribution, Cinemax aims to bring more Nollywood films to audiences worldwide, cementing Nigeria’s place as a powerhouse in Africa’s entertainment landscape.
This success story not only showcases the strength of Nigerian storytelling but also highlights the growing clout of Nollywood, as it competes with international releases and wins the support of an expanding fan base.
