Afrobeats sensation Stanley Omah Didia, widely known as Omah Lay, has shared how his harrowing prison experience in Uganda profoundly impacted his life and career, fueling his passion for freedom and creativity.
Fans may recall that in December 2020, Omah Lay, alongside fellow artist Tems, was arrested and detained in Uganda after performing at a concert at Speke Resort, Kampala, despite the country’s strict COVID-19 restrictions. The two artists were charged, sent to prison, and held for three days before being granted bail.
In a recent interview with Amazon Music, Omah Lay opened up about how those three days behind bars drastically changed his outlook on life. “After being in that cell for three days, I just love my freedom so much now that I fight for it with every record,” he revealed.
The ‘Soso’ hitmaker explained that his newfound appreciation for freedom has become a recurring theme in his music. “I don’t want to give Uganda too much credit for locking me up, but that experience definitely shifted my perspective on what it means to be free,” Omah Lay added.
