Former Disney Channel star Debby Ryan is speaking candidly about a major health battle, opening up regarding a serious brain injury that completely shifted her daily life
Appearing on the Mythical Kitchen YouTube channel for the Last Meals web series, the 33-year-old actress detailed a scary medical journey.
The Fifth Concussion: Ryan revealed she has suffered five concussions throughout her life. While her first four stemmed from isolated incidents, her most serious trauma involved sustained shaking over a minute.
Months Out of Work: The severe trauma left the actress out of commission for six months, during which she underwent intensive neurological rehabilitation.
Cutting-Edge Treatment: Ryan humorously described utilizing a “fringe science treatment” that felt like sci-fi to help get her back on her feet, though she noted that some cognitive changes and sensory hurdles like severe light and noise sensitivity have permanently remained.
Reflecting on how much the experience transformed her perspective, Ryan shared that she now informally splits her timeline into chapters of “pre-incident Debby and post-incident Debby”.
Coping With Migraines: She highlighted how the brain injuries heavily worsened her chronic migraines, leading to sensory overload where the world often feels too loud or bright.
A Strong Support System: Crediting her husband, friends, and inner circle for holding space through her healing, Ryan continues to navigate her career and personal life with a newfound resilience.
