R&B singer Mario is opening up about what might be one of the biggest missed opportunities of his early career—and how it could still be haunting him today.
During a recent appearance on Drink Champs, the “Let Me Love You” hitmaker revealed that he once turned down a chance to perform alongside Jay-Z at Madison Square Garden—all because of a girl.
“At the time, I was dating this girl in Jersey. And the night they wanted me to come out, I already had plans with her,” Mario said, recalling the peak of his fame in the early 2000s after dropping “Just A Friend 2002.”
Mario’s manager had called to tell him that Hov wanted him onstage for a special moment. But teenage Mario made a different choice.
“I was like, ‘Shh, ahh, I can’t,’” he laughed. “I was young, having fun.”
But that decision may have come with a price. While reflecting, the now 37-year-old singer admitted he’s never been invited to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Brunch, a prestigious annual event attended by the industry’s elite.
“I don’t know if Jay took that some type of way…” Mario said, hinting that the snub might still be on Hov’s radar.
And if you know Jay-Z, you know—he doesn’t forget.
Just ask Ne-Yo, who shared a similar story on Club Shay Shay in 2023. The Grammy-winning songwriter recalled how Jay still gives him flak for giving Mario the chart-topping hit “Let Me Love You,” which spent over 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“To this day, he yells at me about giving that damn song away,” Ne-Yo said. “But I was just a songwriter at the time—I didn’t write it for myself.”
A Teenage Blunder That Still Echoes Today?
While Mario’s romantic decision might have made sense back then, it’s clear it came at a cost. He may have missed a rare moment to share the stage with Jay-Z at MSG—a career milestone for any artist. And in an industry that thrives on relationships, skipping that opportunity may have quietly shaped the course of his future connections.
Still, Mario seems to take it all in stride.
“I was young, I was just living life,” he said with a shrug.
But whether it’s a playful grudge or simply a long memory, Jay-Z might not be rushing to send that brunch invite anytime soon.
