Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon may no longer be married, but they’ve built a strong co-parenting bond centered around their twins, Monroe and Moroccan.
In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Carey got candid about how she and Cannon manage to maintain a peaceful balance for their children. “They spend time with him, and they have a good time; they spend time with me, and they have a good time,” she shared. “I want to make sure I’m always fair about the situation because it’s tough to grow up with divorced parents.”
Cannon, who has spoken publicly about their parenting dynamic in the past, echoed a similar sentiment to PEOPLE magazine, saying, “There’s no hard feelings and ill will. Ultimately, it’s about putting the kids first and making sure they have the best childhood they could possibly have.”
The former couple first met in 2008 when Cannon starred in Carey’s Bye Bye music video. Just months later, they shocked the world by marrying in a private ceremony in the Bahamas. Though their marriage lasted eight years, they separated amicably — and have since worked hard to prioritize their family over everything.
Reflecting on their relationship, Cannon once opened up on the Ray Daniels Presents podcast about how being married to one of the biggest pop stars in the world shaped his identity. “I got married in my 20s to the biggest star in the world,” he said. “I would lie up at night thinking, ‘Is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man?’” He also admitted feeling like he had to take a backseat in the relationship, saying, “She’s rocking being all the alpha that she is.”
Today, both stars are thriving in their individual lanes. Cannon continues his run as host and producer of Wild ‘N Out, while Carey is preparing to drop her highly anticipated 16th studio album, Here For It All, set for release on September 26.
Despite the fame and the split, one thing is clear: they’ve built a healthy rhythm as co-parents — one rooted in respect, fairness, and love for their children.
