Lionel Messi’s debut MLS postseason journey came to a swift end as Inter Miami suffered a surprising 3-2 loss to Atlanta United, halting their championship aspirations. Despite Miami’s impressive regular season, which saw them set a league record with 74 points, they couldn’t maintain their form in the playoffs.
The match began with high energy as Miami scored first with Matias Rojas finding the net in the 17th minute. However, Atlanta quickly responded with two goals from forward Jamal Thiare in the 19th and 21st minutes. Messi managed to equalize with a 65th-minute goal, but Atlanta reclaimed the lead when Bartosz Slisz scored a decisive header in the 76th minute.
Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan held his ground in a tense finish, as Messi’s final attempts, including a free kick, were blocked. The defeat has Miami fans disappointed after high expectations were set by Messi’s arrival and the team’s strong season performance.
Atlanta United now advances to face Orlando City in the semi-finals, while Messi and Miami will look to rebuild for the next season.
