The most-watched film in Netflix history is getting a follow-up. The streaming giant confirmed on March 12 that K-Pop: Demon Hunters 2 is officially in development, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning to helm the project. The sequel marks the first major output from the duo’s new exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal with Netflix for animation.

The original K-Pop: Demon Hunters, released in June 2025, became an unprecedented global sensation. The film follows fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, as they navigate superstardom while secretly protecting the world from demons. Their rivals? The Saja Boys, a demonic boy band in disguise, threaten to break the mystical Honmoon barrier that keeps evil at bay.

What followed was nothing short of historic. The film shattered Netflix records with more than 480 million views in its first six months, making it the platform’s most-watched original movie of all time. Its soundtrack dominated global charts, with the anthem “Golden” reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming the first K-pop song ever to win a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

The film’s impact extended far beyond streaming numbers. K-Pop: Demon Hunters won Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song at the Golden Globes, along with Critics Choice Awards in the same categories. It heads into this Sunday’s Oscars with two nominations: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden”.

Maggie Kang spoke with palpable emotion about the sequel announcement. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” she said in a statement. “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning”.

Chris Appelhans echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the personal connection to the project. “These characters are like family to us; their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve, and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together”.

The singing voices behind HUNTR/X, Ejae (Rumi), Audrey Nuna (Mira), and Rei Ami (Zoey), have made clear they’re eager to return. Speaking backstage at the Golden Globes in January, Ejae confirmed the trio “definitely” wants to make more music together. “We’re all individually our own songwriters and artists. These two especially are incredible artists themselves. Nothing’s, like, official. But are you kidding? We’re friends, and we’re definitely going to work on more music together”.

South Korean music producer Zhun, who worked on “Golden,” told the BBC he hopes to build on the first film’s energy. “I want to continue the high energy that we brought to the first film,” he said through a translator. He added that combining music with the “visual elements in the film gave us so much energy”.

Plot details remain under wraps, but the directors have previously hinted at deeper exploration of the characters’ backstories. Kang told Entertainment Weekly in October that the creative team mapped out a larger mythology. “What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstories? How did they get chosen? There was really not a space for the movie to show all that. So, we really had to make these choices of what is essential to the story, and that is the information that we will show”.

Speculation among fans points to Rumi’s partial demon heritage, hinted at in the original, as a potential central thread, along with the return of the Saja Boys and their complicated dynamic with HUNTR/X.

Animation takes time. The first film required seven years from pitch to release, and the sequel faces similar timelines. While Netflix hasn’t announced an official release date, industry reports suggest a 2029 premiere, with development ramping up after this weekend’s Oscars ceremony.

For now, fans can celebrate the confirmation. The world of HUNTR/X is expanding. And as Kang promised: this is only the beginning.
