Adam Sandler has paid an emotional tribute to late actor Cameron Boyce, describing him as someone who “felt like a family member” to everyone who worked with him. Cameron, who tragically passed away in 2019 at the age of 20 following a seizure caused by epilepsy, played Sandler’s on-screen son in Grown Ups (2010) and Grown Ups 2 (2013).
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sandler opened up about the bond they shared and why he made sure to honour Cameron’s memory in his latest film Happy Gilmore 2. In the movie, a subtle yet touching moment shows Cameron on a TV screen while Sandler’s character is checking in at a golf course — a nod that longtime fans instantly recognised as a tribute.
“Love that kid,” Sandler said. “He was one of the sweetest persons I’ve ever met — just constantly in a good mood, constantly great energy, loving to everybody. He felt like a family member to us when we were shooting Grown Ups. Of course, we were going to shoot with Cameron on Hubie Halloween, and we were getting ready to have a great time together, and we lost him. We think of him all the time.”
Cameron’s mother, Libby Boyce, acknowledged the tribute by sharing a still from Happy Gilmore 2 on Instagram, writing: “Thank you @adamsandler for honoring Cam’s legacy in Happy Gilmore 2.” She also reflected on the close friendship between the two, revealing that they were still in touch shortly before Cameron’s sudden passing.
“Adam and Cameron talked quite a bit in the days leading up to his death,” she said. “Cameron was supposed to be in Hubie Halloween. They had a bond I think related to being authentic, funny and just keeping it real. Adam always finds a way to keep Cam’s memory alive, which warms our heart.”
Sandler had previously honoured Cameron in Hubie Halloween with a special message during the closing credits that read:
“In loving memory of CAMERON BOYCE. Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.”
Cameron Boyce’s legacy continues to live on through his work and the love of those who knew him best — a legacy that Sandler is clearly committed to keeping alive.
