After decades of fan anticipation, Gremlins 3 may finally be crawling toward the big screen—but it’s now up to one man to make it official: Steven Spielberg.
Zach Galligan, who played the original protagonist Billy Peltzer in Gremlins (1984) and its sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), confirmed at Comic-Con Manchester that Warner Bros. already has a script ready and is “incredibly interested” in bringing the mischievous creatures back. The only thing left? Spielberg’s approval.
“After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script,” Galligan told fans. “Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it. Apparently, it’s waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
This update follows previous teases earlier this year from Warner Bros. Pictures co-chief Pam Abdy, who hinted that fresh entries in both the Gremlins and Goonies franchises were in active development. Speaking to Deadline, she noted:
“We’re super excited about Amblin developing with Chris Columbus new entries in the Gremlinsand Goonies franchises.”
Columbus, who wrote the original Gremlins screenplay, is also tied to the project, likely returning in a creative capacity. The first film, directed by Joe Dante, became a cult classic by mixing horror with slapstick comedy and introducing the now-iconic mogwai Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandel). Its massive success spawned a more satirical sequel in 1990—but the franchise has remained dormant since then.
Now, thanks to the renewed interest in nostalgic IPs following hits like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Warner Bros. is ready to breathe new life into the mischievous mayhem of the Gremlins universe. All that stands between us and chaos in a box is Spielberg’s final word.
So, Mogwai fans, keep your fingers crossed—and don’t feed them after midnight.
