Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has reassured fans that he’s doing just fine after undergoing a non-emergency medical procedure in Rome, Italy — dismissing circulating reports of a health scare as completely false.
The 86-year-old Godfather director had a scheduled update to a previous procedure with his longtime physician, Dr. Andrea Natale, who has been his doctor for over 30 years. Contrary to alarming rumours, his spokesperson confirmed that there was no emergency and that Coppola simply went to the hospital “in a car” for the planned visit.
“Mr. Coppola went in for a scheduled update procedure… and is resting nicely. All is well,” the rep said in a statement.
Taking to Instagram, Coppola personally gave fans an update and a bit of light-hearted reassurance.
“Da Dada (what my kids call me) is fine,” he wrote. “Taking an opportunity while in Rome to do the update of my 30-year-old afib procedure with its inventor, a great Italian doctor – Dr Andrea Natale! I am well!”
The iconic director had previously undergone a procedure to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib), a condition that causes irregular heartbeats, and this latest visit was simply a follow-up.
Coppola has been on the move all summer, promoting his passion project Megalopolis, released in 2024. During a recent screening in San Francisco on August 1, he opened up about personal loss, reflecting on the death of his wife Eleanor last year.
“I lost my wife a year ago, around this time,” he told the audience. “But my attitude for death is that I always lived my life so that when I was at the moment approaching death, I wouldn’t say: ‘Oh, I wish I had done this and I wish I had done that.’”
He continued with a moving metaphor:
“I’m going to be so busy saying all the things I got to do… that when I die, I’m not going to notice it. You know how your electric toothbrush just shuts off when you least expect it? That’s what death is like.”
For now, Coppola remains healthy, grateful, and very much in the moment — proving once again that even after decades in Hollywood, he still knows how to keep the drama on screen.
