Veteran rapper and producer Eldee has revealed that he recognized Wizkid’s star power the very first time they met. Speaking on the Adesope Live Podcast, Eldee recounted his early impressions of the young artist, sharing how he immediately saw the potential that would later catapult Wizkid to global fame.
I saw that Wizkid had something as soon as he walked in
Eldee said, recalling the formative years of Wizkid’s career. He mentioned that he had a pivotal conversation with Banky W, the singer and record label executive who discovered Wizkid.
I’m not trying to take credit
Eldee explained, “but I feel like part of what I said to Banky W gave them the confidence to move forward. I told him, ‘This kid has something, and we have to make sure he doesn’t fall into the wrong circles.’”
Eldee also discussed his contributions to shaping Wizkid’s sound during his early days, emphasizing the need for balance and a wide appeal. Drawing inspiration from international acts like Roc City, Eldee advised Banky W and Wizkid on finding a middle ground.
“He couldn’t do all dancehall because he wasn’t Jamaican,” Eldee said, explaining the approach they took to craft Wizkid’s unique sound.
Eldee also reminisced about hearing Don’t Dull for the first time, the hit song that would become one of Wizkid’s breakout tracks.
When Wizkid first played Don’t Dull for us, I was like, ‘This is it.
His first big performance was at the Sound City Video Music Awards, and that marked the beginning of everything.”
