In a recent interview, Nigerian music executive Muyiwa Awoniyi, popularly known as Donawon and the manager of Grammy-winning artist Tems, revealed the backstory of her celebrated collaboration on Wait for U with rap heavyweights Future and Drake.
Tems’ star has been rising internationally since her breakout with Essence, opening doors to collaborations with icons like Rihanna and Beyoncé. But one of her biggest career moments came with Wait for U, which won her a Grammy after two nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
Donawon shared that it all started while Tems and her team were on a set for Coca-Cola. In the midst of their work, he received an urgent email from Epic Records, Future’s label, seeking permission to use a sample from Tems’ song Higher as the main hook for a new track. Surprisingly, Drake wasn’t initially featured on the song when they cleared the sample, adding an unexpected twist as the collaboration evolved.
Wait for U has since become a major milestone in Tems’ journey, showing the power of cross-continental collaborations and highlighting the global impact of Nigerian music.
