The DC Universe just got a whole lot brighter. Aaron Pierre, the breakout star of Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, has officially joined the cast of Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn’s highly anticipated sequel to last year’s Superman blockbuster. Pierre will bring the character of John Stewart, a role he’s already set to play in HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series, to the big screen, marking a significant step in Gunn’s vision of a fully interconnected DC Universe.
Pierre confirmed the news on his Instagram on Friday, sending waves through the fandom. The 31-year-old actor will first make his DC debut this August when Lanterns premieres on HBO. In that series, he plays John Stewart, a Green Lantern in training who’s barely two months into the job and hasn’t even worn the ring yet. Kyle Chandler co-stars as Hal Jordan, the veteran Lantern tasked with mentoring the rookie as they investigate a murder in the American heartland, a mystery with universe-altering consequences.
The series, created by Damon Lindelof, has been described as a “buddy-cop investigation drama” in the vein of True Detective, grounding cosmic characters in a small-town murder mystery. Now, before audiences even meet him on TV, Pierre’s John Stewart is already slated for a cinematic appearance.
Scheduled for release on July 9, 2027, Man of Tomorrow picks up where 2025’s Superman left off. David Corenswet returns as Kal-El/Clark Kent, with Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor. But this time, the billionaire supervillain and the Man of Steel find themselves on the same side.
The plot forces Superman and Luthor into an unlikely alliance against a threat far bigger than both: Brainiac. German actor Lars Eidinger has been cast as the highly intelligent cosmic menace, a collector of worlds who arrives on Earth with technology that challenges everything the heroes understand. Gunn has described the sequel as “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” promising a deeper exploration of the iconic antagonist.
Pierre joins a crowded field of returning and new faces. Rachel Brosnahan is back as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo returns as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio reprises her role as Eve Teschmacher. The superhero lineup also includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer, both of whom appeared in the first film.
Nathan Fillion will also return as Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern, creating potential Corps dynamics alongside Pierre’s Stewart.
Pierre’s casting represents a key test of Gunn’s strategy for the new DCU: television and film existing in the same narrative space, with characters flowing seamlessly between formats. John Stewart’s presence in a Superman sequel makes logical sense, both Superman and Brainiac are characters with deep space connections, and a Green Lantern’s jurisdiction covers the cosmos.
Production is set to begin this spring in Atlanta, with filming scheduled through the summer. For Pierre, the role caps a remarkable rise. After earning raves for Rebel Ridge and voicing Mufasa in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, he’s now anchoring one of the most important characters in DC’s new mythology.
