Chris Hemsworth Shows Off Leaner, Smarter Physique for Avengers: Doomsday—Less Bulk, More Balance

Chris Hemsworth is back in the gym prepping for his return as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday—but this time, it’s not about pushing to extremes. In newly surfaced workout photos, the Australian star looks every bit the Norse god fans have come to expect, but with a noticeably leaner, more functional frame.

With Avengers: Doomsday set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, the actor and his longtime trainer, Luke Zocchi, are taking a more measured, mindful approach to training. The goal? Staying ripped without sacrificing health or enjoyment.

“We’re not killing ourselves as much,” Zocchi told The Independent. “We’re being a bit more in tune with our bodies.”

Smarter Training, Not Just Bigger Gains

Unlike the brutal regimen Hemsworth followed for Thor: Love and Thunder—which included ten 450-calorie meals per day and relentless strongman-style training—his Doomsday plan dials things back:

Training Split: Classic push-pull-legs

Schedule: One day on, one day off for weights

Cardio: Alternating cardio days include incline treadmill walks, StairMaster, rowing, SkiErg, and boxing

Diet: A much lighter intake of four to five meals per day, without the force-feeding approach

“He wasn’t enjoying how much food he had to eat [for Love and Thunder],” Zocchi said. “We’re not ramming the food down his throat, but he still looks great.”

Leaner Thor for a Darker Saga?

While Hemsworth may not bulk up to the godlike size we saw in Love and Thunder, the change seems intentional. The story of Avengers: Doomsday remains under wraps, but the title alone suggests a darker, more grounded tone—one where agility and realism might matter more than sheer size.

Hemsworth’s evolving Thor could also reflect the MCU’s gradual pivot toward grittier, character-driven arcs, with Doomsday rumored to introduce Doctor Doom as the new major villain.

Boxing, Balance, and Recovery

What’s refreshing about Hemsworth’s Doomsday prep is the emphasis on balance over burnout. Alongside functional cardio and strength training, the actor has returned to boxing, a nod to Zocchi’s roots and a smart way to stay sharp, quick, and lean.

“We mix it up just to keep him moving,” Zocchi explained. “It’s not just about muscle—it’s about mobility, endurance, and mindset too.”

The Bottom Line

Chris Hemsworth isn’t chasing size anymore—he’s chasing sustainability. With Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon and Thor’s story heading into uncharted emotional and cosmic territory, the actor is choosing longevity over limits.

Whether this new approach gives us a more evolved version of the God of Thunder remains to be seen. But judging from the first look? Thor still packs a punch—and now he’s doing it smarter.

Marvel fans, mark your calendars: December 18, 2026.
